The "PROXY server" course is intended for administrators of computer networks of any size who want to optimize data flows from/to the internet with the aim of directing users' access to the web, increasing the response speed of web servers, reducing the volume of transferred data by using proxy server cache memories and thus reducing financial connection costs. Within this course, a network administrator will practically learn to configure in detail the freely available Squid proxy server, operable on the BSD/UNIX/Linux and Windows platform. Squid is a proxy server that is often used by internet providers. It supports HTTP(S) and FTP protocols. It enables not only saving financial connection costs, but also financial costs related to ineffective user activity (e.g. during working hours). It provides means for effective filtering of web access (allowing/denying access), for example based on date/time, domain name, IP addresses, keywords, etc.

Training syllabus PROXY SERVER
Syllabus
- introduction to proxy server issues (types and functions of proxy servers, computer network architecture with a proxy server, description of communication between the server and devices in the network); advantages and disadvantages, possibilities of using individual types and functions of a proxy server; Squid installation, first steps after installation and basic settings needed to start a non-transparent proxy server; basic (manual) configuration of clients (internet browsers Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Opera, Safari and Google Chrome) for communication with a proxy server; practical configuration of Squid proxy server (detailed configuration of individual ACLs (Access Control Lists) in several case studies - content filtering based on source and destination IP address or domain, keywords, date/time, ports, protocols, browsers used by clients, users); advanced (semi-automatic and automatic, centralized) configuration of clients (internet browsers Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) for communication with a proxy server using PAC (Proxy auto-config) + HTTP server, WPAD + DHCP server technologies; automatic, centralized administration of all installations of Mozilla applications (Firefox) in a computer network (e.g. administration of proxy settings, protection of administrator-defined settings against changes by users, centralized definition of other settings for all installations in a computer network); searching for and removing problems with a proxy server (analysis of Squid server logs, or analysis of network traffic).
Output knowledge
Practical experience with an operating system on the BSD/UNIX/Linux platform and mastering the basic administrator tools on the command line.
